We are in contact with all referring physicians to ensure that your therapy regime is suited to your needs. You can count on having all of your post-surgical needs met as we are committed to progressing you to achieve maximal results.

Osteoarthritis and Weight Management

“A 2005 study in Arthritis & Rheumatism of overweight and obese adults with knee osteoarthritis found that losing one pound of weight resulted in four pounds of pressure being removed from the knees.” In other words, losing just 10 pounds would relieve 40 pounds of pressure from your knees. Stroma’s combination of hands on care and therapeutic exercises provides a sound equation to helping you ease pain and discomfort caused by arthritis symptoms. We are committed to helping patients be their best selves by setting attainable goals and supporting our patients. Please see the nutrition page in the services section for more information about weight management.

Therapeutic Exercise and Exercise Programs

Exercise prescription at Stroma Physical Therapy involves a combination of aerobic, strength, stability and stretch activities that ensure that the body is improving in relation to an injury. Our programs are designed to help patients get stronger, feel better and most importantly, give them knowledge to help return them to independence and functional mobility. If you are not injured, and need to be placed on a program designed specifically for your needs, we have PT’s, Exercise Physiologists and Personal Trainers on staff to help devise the right program for you.

Gait Analysis and Orthotics

Your body’s alignment begins with your feet. Stroma Physical Therapy offers semi-custom orthotics from Vasyli that are heat molded to personalize fit. They come in a range of sizes and shapes to fit in any shoe, from sneakers to high heels. An orthotics prescription comes with a gait assessment, which includes assessing your foot in weight bearing, like walking and running, and non-weight bearing. We also heat mold your orthotic on the spot so that you can walk away with a pair on your first session!

Low Back Pain / Herniation

85% of back pain is misdiagnosed. We are committed to looking at the causes of your back pain and addressing it right from the root of the problem. With our diagnostic skills, we look at your pain complaints and put together a treatment plan that consists of manual therapy, motor retraining, and stabilization exercises that focus on the trunk. Please see our Facebook and Instagram pages for suggestions on a basic trunk strengthening program.

Sciatica is a symptom not a diagnosis. It can be the result of many different problems including nerve root impingement, herniation, stenosis, anterolisthesis, and piriformis syndrome. Using a detailed history and our diagnostic techniques, we can determine the cause of the pain and address it directly using a multitude of techniques. The key is identifying the source, and once located, improvements can be seen very quickly.

Neck Pain / Herniation

Neck pain is treated in a holistic way at Stroma Physical Therapy. Although pain complaints can be varied due to a variety of conditions which include degenerative disc disease, arthritis, herniation, nerve root impingement, thoracic outlet syndrome, loss of curvature known as kyphosis of the cervical spine, dowagers hump, poor desk posture and other conditions, the spine in its entirety is evaluated in order to determine how it operates and affects the area of pain. Our bodies are more connected than one might think! Using strong manual therapy skills and a full body approach, we can relieve neck pain quickly and effectively.

Osteopenia / Osteoporosis

At Stroma Physical Therapy, we treat bone density conditions using a weight bearing and bone building strategy. Depending on the frailty of the bones, we consider the safest approaches to dealing with this diagnosis. We also include balance training as routine in order to help prevent and reduce the risk of falls. We are also trained in Pilates which is incorporated into our treatment plan if applicable.

Running Related Injuries

At Stroma Physical Therapy, we treat running conditions such as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS), patellar tendonitis, Achilles tendonitis, hip labrum tears, Iliotibial Band Friction Syndrome (ITBFS), foot pronation and other foot strike conditions. After completing a running analysis with your Stroma Therapist, we treat our runners with a combination of manual therapy and exercise prescription that targets the mechanical fault. As we understand the rigor of training for half-marathons and marathons, we prepare our runners with specific programs to help them get back to the track quickly and pain-free.

Office-Related Injury and Ergonomics

The most physically demanding professions requires a human to sit still, in one posture, staring at a screen, day after day. Sitting is the new smoking. Our team is devoted to breaking this cycle using manual therapy to help reeducate tense and weak muscles, postural therapy which focuses on optimal muscle length and reduced joint force load, as well as tips on an ergonomic desk environment. With some tips on stretch and exercise, patients can walk out of a therapy session feeling stronger, more informed and ready to take on the challenges of the day ahead. We are also trained in Pilates, which is incorporated into our treatment plan if applicable.

General Weakness and Injury Prevention

For our de-conditioned patients we approach therapy that is paced and deliberate with a layering strength training approach. Basic exercises can be challenging especially when considering form. Stroma therapists, exercise physiologists, personal trainers and aides maintain focus on all of our patients that are exercising paying close attention to not just what exercise they are doing but how they are performing it. We are also trained in Pilates which is incorporated into our treatment plan if applicable.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV is an inner ear condition in which “crystals” called otoconia or otoliths float freely in the vestibular apparatus. It is a balance disorder similar to Meniere’s Disease or Labyrinthitis. This can disrupt the signal to your brain about head position resulting in dizziness symptoms. At Stroma, we can diagnose the condition with the dix-hallpike maneuver and treat it using a multitude of techniques including the Epley maneuver. Additionally, we use basic exercises to habituate our patients suffering from balance disorders in order to re-equilibrate their system.

Balance Disorders

There are 3 senses humans use to balance: the visual system, the vestibular system and the somatosensory system on the bottom of the feet. Using these 3 systems as our guide, we treat and train balance dysfunction with a combination of manual therapy, proprioception exercises and general conditioning. We also treat BPPV which is also a balance disorder. Please refer to the BPPV section above for more information.

Our therapists at Stroma Physical Therapy focus on treating headaches by understanding the causes of the symptom. Posture, screen time, stress, physical activity and nutrition are all relevant to headache symptoms. With a combination of manual therapy, massage, trigger point therapy, postural training using Pilates and exercise prescription, we can target your headache symptoms in a multi-modal fashion. Our therapists with a nutrition background can set out a 5 point treatment plan to help reduce the impact that diet may have on symptoms.

Orofacial Pain including TMD

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint which is responsible for chewing or mastication. Dysfunction around the joint results in TMD or Temporomandibular Dysfunction. Our therapists use a wide variety of treatment techniques to help remedy pain related to the TMJ and other associated symptoms like neck pain, headaches and bruxism (grinding). Using a hands-on approach, we combine manual therapy, trigger point release, intra-oral release using ICT™ by Stroma, postural training, general conditioning and core strengthening using the Pilates Method to help relieve orofacial pain symptoms.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Pain, numbness and tingling in the first three fingers of the hand (and occasionally the ring finger) can be the result of a narrowing of a tunnel created by the wrist bones called carpals. This narrowing can compress on the median nerve that supplies this region of the hand which is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. As we focus our attention on the symptoms, Stroma therapists use a detailed examination of the upper extremity in order to assess the full nerve supply for the hand. For false CTS, where symptoms in the hand are not due to the narrowing rather a nerve impingement somewhere above the wrist, we are able to target the cause and get quick results. For more information about our approach, please contact our office and speak directly to our therapists.

Stroke Rehabilitation

Outpatient stroke rehabilitation at Stroma is a comprehensive and multi-dimensional approach that uses manual therapy targeted at improved recovery of function, leading research in bracing and taping techniques, and therapeutic exercises that are directed at general strength, core strength and specific limb related neuro-motor retraining. Additionally, our therapists are niched in using Pilates Methodology in order to optimize function. For more information about our approach, please contact our office and speak directly to our therapists.

Meniscal & ACL Knee Injuries

“Meniscal tears are fickle and moody”. This comes from one our referring orthopedic surgeons who, also, was a Stroma patient. In recent studies, physicians are moving away from performing meniscal tear repairs as the outcomes of conservative approaches such as physical therapy versus surgery are showing no significant difference. It is important to emphasize the importance of trying PT prior to any surgical decision. Stroma’s ACL rehabilitation focuses on setting up patients for success by focusing on quadriceps strength and knee extension. See articles below:

Rotator Cuff Injuries and Other Shoulder Injuries

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body and injuries of the shoulder, which include rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor) tears, labrum tears, bicipital tendinitis, acromio-clavicular (AC) separations, osteoarthritis, thoracic outlet syndrome, snapping scapula, and fractures, can result in a complicated rehabilitation process. The shoulder needs both stability and mobility to function normally and our Stroma staff are on top of leading research to ensure that your recovery is as smooth as the movement of your shoulder will be after therapy.

Strains / Sprains

Muscle strains and ligamentous strains are a part of not just sport injury but also non-athletic injury as well. Pulled a muscle in your back? Rolled your ankle on the curb? Ruptured your quadriceps playing touch football? These types of injuries require specific treatment plans and focus. Stroma therapists are specific. It is the details that allow us to better serve our patients and improve recovery time.

A diagnosis is not a mechanism. At Stroma Physical Therapy, we are committed to
unveiling the underlying mechanism that manifests into your pain symptom. For
instance, sciatica is a diagnosis however does not exemplify why it exists. It
may be caused by a pinched nerve, a herniated disc or even a restricted
Piriformis Muscle which causes the same symptom pattern. Stroma therapists are
specific. Details can make all the difference and reduce treatment duration.
Stroma therapists ask many focused questions to understand your pain, then use
their tools to unveil and treat the cause.

We deal with verifications and insurance companies to help you get to your health quickly. Our friendly staff provides quick verification of insurance companies.
